Synopsis

The development of a successful and efficient perioperative approach to patient care requires knowledge and skills in a variety of key areas. These include consideration of human factors and leadership, health economics, perioperative outcomes and the use of protocols and pathways. This unit will equip students in these areas and enable them to complete a major (capstone) project relating to their own practice in Perioperative Medicine.

 

Pre-requisite/Co-requisite

Successful completion of units POM5101, POM5102 and/or POM5103 in course code M6033. If enrolled full-time in the final semester one of these units can be enrolled concurrently with POM5104.

Students completing a course variation in course codes M6027 and 3896 need to have successfully completed units POM5001, POM5002, POM5003 and POM5004 before enrolling in this unit.

 

Outcomes

  1.  Evaluate the different models of perioperative care that exist globally.
  2.  Recognise the key role that human factors play in the leadership and development of a highly functional perioperative team.
  3.  Incorporate emerging and standard protocols and pathways in complex patient management.
  4.  Demonstrate an understanding of the economic implications of efficient perioperative practice.
  5.  Understand the importance of defining and accurately measuring patient outcomes and the implication to best practice.

For the Capstone Project:

  1.  Develop a major (capstone) project addressing a key and relevant area of Perioperative Medicine.
  2.  Synthesise critical arguments in relation to the available relevant literature about the topic.
  3.  Apply knowledge gained throughout the course to the chosen area of interest.
  4.  Recommend a clear plan to address the aims and outcomes of the selected project.
  5.  Demonstrate writing skills that meet the academic standards associated with a research informed project.

Assessments

  1.  Short Essay (1500 words) = 20%
  2.  Individual iSAP Case based assessment (1500 words) = 20%
  3.  Capstone Project (6000 words) = 60%
