Course FAQ

How many hours per week do I need to dedicate to course learning?

The three 12 credit point units (POM5101, POM5102, POM5103) are quite intensive and we suggest 20 to 24 hours per week of study commitment for each unit to view the lectures, complete the reading packages and dedication to research in answering the course work (essays, group discussions and short answer questions). The two 6 credit point capstone project units (POM5105 and POM5106) are less intensive but still require a suggested minimum of 10 to 15 hours of study dedication for each unit. These 2 units can be studied concurrently (or separately) with POM5106 the last enrolled unit/s of the course.

Can I take study leave (i.e. intermission) during the course?

Intermission (study leave) can be granted for up to 12 months (i.e. two semesters either taken together or separately) during the duration of the course. To apply, please complete an Intermission Application Form (link to our forms) and email the form to the Department of Anaesthesiology Course Administrator at med-periopmedicine@monash.edu

Intermission applications can be submitted at any time, keeping in mind the census date for applicable semester/s.

What is a census date?

The census date is:

  • the last day before you become liable for fees for the units you're enrolled in.
  • the last day you can withdraw from a unit without Withdrawn showing on your academic record (there are some exceptions)

You have until 11.59pm on the census date to make changes to your units without financial or academic penalty.

When does access to the online course material open and close?

Enrolled students receive a Welcome Package to their Monash student email account one week prior to the official semester start date for each enrolled unit.

Unit content is released on a weekly basis (as appropriate) and assessment tasks have a set release date and due date.

Content is unable to be released outside of this period. If you have planned leave during the semester you will need to manage your study commitments as required.

For all units, access to the unit material/web closes immediately after the end of the semester.

Can I have ongoing access to the online material once I have completed the course?

Course material is only available for the duration of the applicable semester study period.

I am considering studying the Master of Perioperative Medicine; do I receive credit for units studied as part of the Graduate Certificate of Perioperative Medicine?

Yes, you do! The two units studied are eligible for credit towards your Masters’ degree. You will then need to complete 3 more units. These are either POM5101, POM5102, or POM5103 (depending on which unit you did not complete as part of the Graduate Certificate of Medicine) in addition to both POM5105 and POM5106 capstone project units.

I have completed the Graduate Certificate; how do I apply for the Master of Perioperative Medicine?

Once you have completed the Graduate Certificate, you are eligible to apply for the Master of Medicine during the next open admission period. Your units studied in the Graduate Certificate will be credited towards the Master of Medicine (subject to meeting the 7-year credit recency policy and unit content not changing significantly over this period).

I have completed the Graduate Certificate; how long can I take to decide whether I want to continue studies with the Master of Perioperative Medicine?

You have 7 years from completing the Graduate Certificate to enrolling into the Master of Medicine for successfully completed units to be credited to the Masters.

Can you provide examples of capstone projects for the Master of Perioperative Medicine?

Admissions FAQ

Can I apply for part-time and change to full-time later (and vice versa)?

Yes, subject to unit availability and course progression. Please contact us for more information. If you are unsure of your ability to devote time to study, students are encouraged to begin part-time.

Can I apply for either course if I have a Bachelor of Science?

Unfortunately, no. The academic entry requirement is a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science (MBBS) or Doctor of Medicine (MD). You are welcome to apply when you meet this (and other) admission requirements.

What is meant by ‘2 years of clinical hospital medicine experience’?

Students need 2 years of clinical hospital medicine before being able to apply for the Graduate Certificate or Master of Medicine. For example, if a student graduates from a MBBS in November 2020 they are eligible to apply from the 2023 calendar year onward if they have continued with postgraduate medical trainee and placements during those two years. As the Master of Medicine program culminates in the student determining and submitting a capstone project, students need this experience to get the most out of the project.

If I can’t find a copy of my MBBS testamur/academic transcript, can I provide a Fellowship Certificate instead?

Unfortunately, not. As part of the Admissions Policy you must provide a copy of your MBBS testamur and academic transcript (list of results).

How do I pay for the course and do I have to pay all at once?

Fees are charged per unit/s enrolled each semester. Students can pay fees each semester or full calendar year of enrolment. Statements are issued from 4+ weeks prior to semester commencement. The Monash Fees Department manages all student Fees. For further information and contact details please visit https://monash.edu/fees

How do I receive my fee statement (invoice)?

This is accessed through your Monash WES (Web Enrolment System) account or by contacting the Monash Fees Department.

What is the refund policy?

Enrolled students have until the census date at the beginning of each semester to withdraw from unit/s without financial and/or academic penalty (student amenity fees may still apply). The census date is when the University finalises your enrolment. If you withdraw after the census date you forfeit paid fees and are likely to incur an academic penalty.

Is fee assistance available?

The Master of Medicine is full fee-paying only. Students can apply for FEE-HELP if they are eligible to do so.

Capstone Project FAQ

Is the only information about what the capstone project needs to entail available on the Masters website or is there more dedicated information elsewhere?

Information regarding the capstone project is available on top of this web page. Information has been kept deliberately sparse to encourage you to think about what is relevant to your work and your institution and how you might use this opportunity to instigate change in your workplace. We are always very happy to discuss project ideas.

What does ‘Word count 6000 words (or equivalent)’ mean?

The word count is meant as a guide only and as an indicator of the amount of time and work that is expected for the project. Clearly if your project is presented as a (very) long essay or mini-thesis then the word count is relevant. However, if you include video, podcasts, information brochures, posters, business plans etc the assessors will make an assessment of the time that was likely involved in preparing such resources.

Does my project need references?

Yes.

Referencing is required for all submitted text Vancouver style

Can students access a statistician as part of working on the capstone project?

You are welcome to engage the services of a statistician if necessary but unfortunately, we can't provide this service. Clearly their work should not be represented as your own. Please refer to the Monash Uni Software Catalogue for more information about available software which can be used as a Monash University student.

Can you provide examples of capstone projects undertaken by past students?
  • Development of a protocol for the care of #NOF patient.
  • Development/extension of a perioperative medicine service for a hospital or a subgroup of patients (elderly, complex urology, hip fractures etc).

How much of the PebblePad workbook needs to be completed by the beginning of Week 3?

Only the first page (Project Proposal) needs to be completed by the first deadline in POM5105.

However, we encourage you to start working on your Action Plan early as this will help you plan your project and enable us to offer advice and assistance along the way.

Do I need to tick the "Mark page as complete" box when I've finished a page?

This is not entirely necessary but it does assist us (and you) in tracking your progress. Either way you will still be able to go back and edit any page at any time. This is a ‘live’ online platform and as such your latest entry will always be saved and will be able to be viewed by your unit coordinators.

How do I submit my final project?

All documents that make up your final project need to be uploaded into the ‘Project Documents’ page in the PebblePad workbook.

Can I be creative in the way I present my project?

Absolutely!

We encourage you to be as creative as possible. Videos, audio files, powerpoint presentations can all be uploaded as well as a variety of different text files. Please contact us if you are unsure.

How do I receive feedback on my PebblePad submissions?

All feedback will be provided within PebblePad.

When feedback has been added you will receive an email notification to your Monash email address.

To access the feedback, open your PebblePad work book and click on the blue tab in the top right corner:
